Ben had his first Pinewood Derby last week. David and Ben started working on his car over Christmas vacation. Over the last six weeks, the car was carefully designed, cut, sanded, drilled and weighted, sanded some more, painted, sanded even more, weighed, and painted. Then the wheels and numbers were added. It was a work of art.
It was so great for them to have project to work on together. David showed Ben how to do the work, and he did most all of it himself.
The big night finally came.
I had no idea how high-tech the pinewood derby had become. It was a pretty impressive track with actual times recorded for each car.
They raced each car four times--once in each lane--to make sure a certain lane wasn't giving an unfair advantage. They had men recording all the times in a spreadsheet and determining averages and fastest times for each car.
Ben's car won his heat (his is the blue car in lane 2). He got 5th place overall. David and Ben spent quite a bit of time checking out the winning cars and getting tips for next year.
I love the look on the boys' face in this picture. The excitement was high!
