We had a wonderful Christmas morning. The kids gathered on the stairs in the pre-dawn hours to see what Santa had brought.
He was good to us this year!
Then the present opening began.
This is what it looked like when we were done.
For the last present, the kids had a bit of a treasure hunt. When they opened the present, inside was another present, and then another. Inside was a key. They figured out it went to the mailbox. They rushed down the street to the mailbox in their pajamas. Inside was a 100-piece puzzle. Here they are putting the puzzle together.
On the back of the puzzle was a cipher. It took them a long time to figure it out (at least an hour). Eventually they realized it said, "Go look in the dryer." Inside the dryer was a picture. They had to find the same picture in a book we have. On that page was a piece of paper with a pictograph. When they eventually solved the pictograph, it led them to a website of a picture of a flying bicycle, which led them to the bicycles hanging in our garage. On top of one of the bike seats was a 3-d puzzle, which they had to solve to find a clue inside (but they actually knocked it off the bike and it broke so it was very easy to solve). The clue inside was a black square, which eventually led them to a black storage box we have in the backyard. Inside was their final Christmas present--the game, Ticket to Ride, and tickets to Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, both showing in Seattle this year.
Many thanks to our friends Mary and John for help putting together the elaborate puzzle. It took the kids a couple of hours, and gave them something (mostly) fun to do on Christmas. There were moments of frustration, but overall I think they had a good time,
We ate our traditional Christmas breakfast of strawberry waffles on these placemats, which we made the day before.
It was a wonderful and relaxing day, topped off by a nerf attack, this time by our friends the Davis and the Jacklins. But no worries...we were prepared!
